We no longer take breaks by detaching ourselves from our screens – be they laptops, desktops, tablets or mobile devices. Instead, we take breaks through on-screen distraction. Doing something fun for a few minutes…or hours…such as perusing Pinterest, tumbling through Tumblr posts or Drawing Something. We escape the email box, the proposal we’re working on, the research we are conducting, etc. to take 5 (or 50) minutes to “lose ourselves in our favorite distractions.”
Oh how good it feels to take a break!
Oddly enough, escaping the open tabs taunting loads of work and instead choosing to scroll through beautiful images of beaches, shiny new shoes and delicious desserts is just what the doctor ordered. A little dose of fantasy life.
It’s becoming rare that we literally go outside for air (or if we do we are likely checking that mobile device at the same time). Think about it, if you have a desk job, escapism is your recess. Maybe it’s checking Facebook or Twitter on your lunch break. Getting home after work and scoping out your favorite fashion blogs. Or flipping through Flipboard while in the waiting room. You are escaping from your surrounding and getting to your “happy place.”
So what is your online “happy place?”
