Intern Swap

Date

The Social Lights teamed up with SixSpeed for an Intern Swap! What’s an Intern Swap, you ask? – Two agencies swap interns for one week. The interns learn new skills and then share their experiences during a Show-and-Tell session (aka Happy Hour). Andrea Stowe of SixSpeed and Jane Lee of The Social Lights switched spots last week….

Meet Andrea
Andrea Stowe

I’m a visual artist—my first mural was when I was four on my bedroom wall.
I have a passion for creating content and telling stories that change perceptions and impact culture. Recently I finished school at Brainco for art direction. Experiential ideas are what I’m drawn to, because when people experience something they take away memories that affect how they do life.
Ten truths about me: I just picked up tambourine playing skills. Paint. Read. Sing. Eat fruit. Star Trek. Just taught myself piano. Born in Seattle. Trained in MN. Was in Mexico for 15 min.

Meet Jane

Glued to her MacBook, Jane stays busy studying the importance of online presence while utilizing her web and graphic skills. She blogs, codes and designs to feed her love for all things digital. In particular, social media fascinates Jane because she sees the impact it has on other peoples’ lives. She even met her guy online! When she finds time to disconnect she enjoys riding on the back of a motorcycle, tossing a Frisbee or spending time in the lovely city of Minneapolis.

Stories from the Swap

Jane has been through The Social Lights® 6-week Community Manager Training Program, so although she primarily works as a graphic designer, she understands the full scope of content creation and management. The role of the Community Manager was completely new to Andrea – last week she built her first content calendar, became familiar with various social media software tools, and was exposed to the several day-to-day CM duties and responsibilities. Andrea enjoyed building the content calendar and, “finding random subjects to turn into posts that related to the brand I worked on.”
Jane enjoyed the collaborative aspect of working with a team of designers. She said, “I had previously thought ‘this designer gets this project while this one gets another,’ but there is always some back-and-forth feedback on whatever you’re working on.”
In terms of “takeaways,” Jane Lee provided us with some good advice suited to just about any work setting:
1. Be resourceful and efficient! – Have a bag of tricks up your sleeve so you can crank out projects for short deadlines. And, as always, ask Google first before asking someone else for guidance.
2. Work as a team – and put a plan in place. You don’t want to say yes to every project and find out later that you’re so busy you have no life outside of work.
3. Be yourself – You don’t want to be the dud in the group! Let your personality shine through. People will notice insincerity. It’s much easier to work with someone who will tell you what they’re really thinking.
